Electric motorcycles are on the rise in India. This is due to a potential future ban on new vehicles with internal combustion engines from 2030. India's metropolises suffer from massive air pollution daily – New Delhi even holds the world record. The brand Ultraviolette is already taking this into account and manufactures exclusively electric motorcycles. The latest model is a crossover motorcycle designated X-47. The naming after an unmanned experimental fighter jet seems a bit daring, but it is probably intended to represent a progressive approach.

The X-47 features a modern look, with a short duckbill under a rather flat-set LED headlight including daytime running lights adorning the front. The supposed tank cover tapers to a point at the front, and the one-piece plastic part extends to the LED taillight at the rear.

As a crossover bike, the X-47 leaves a lot of air between the rear and the rear wheel. The large battery pack appears well integrated and doesn't stand out. A steel tube frame serves as the backbone, with an upside-down fork at the front which, like the rear shock absorber, can be adjusted for preload. A radial four-piston brake caliper with a 320 mm brake disc decelerates the front wheel, while a single-piston brake caliper with a 230 mm disc supports at the rear. The moderately enduro-profiled tires on the cast wheels are not too wide with dimensions of 110/70-17 and 150/60-17.

The X-47 is designed in the style of a touring-capable motorcycle, although the connection between electric motorcycle and travel is naturally difficult. For the X-47, only 7.1 kWh or 10.3 kWh are available anyway. For the smaller version, Ultraviolette specifies a maximum range of 211 km under ideal conditions (IDC), and 323 km for the larger battery. In reality, the range is likely to be significantly shorter, making long trips on the X-47 a lengthy affair due to frequent charging stops. For comparison: Zero Motorcycle specifies an urban range of 249 km for its DS with a 15.6-kWh battery.

Three riding modes are standard. Ultraviolette specifies 183 km for the 7.1-kWh battery and 266 km for the 10.3-kWh battery in Glide mode – with an alleged average consumption of 40 Wh/km. In Combat mode, with an assumed consumption of 52 Wh/km, it should be 144 or 209 km. In Ballistic mode, the average consumption allegedly increases to 60 Wh/km, reducing the range to 128 and 186 km. This seems a bit like catalog value cosmetics.

Only in India does Ultraviolette offer a so-called Type-6 connector for DC fast charging alongside the normal charging cable for the 230-volt socket. However, as this is an Indian peculiarity, it will not be offered in Europe. On 230-volt AC, the smaller battery should be chargeable from 20 to 80 percent in 3.5 hours, and the larger one in 5 hours.

Two versions of the electric motor are available, both offering a continuous output of 9.5 kW. At peak, one motor variant reaches 27 kW, the more powerful one 30 kW. The maximum torque varies accordingly with 90 or 100 Nm. This allows the X-47 to reach a top speed of 145 km/h, and it allegedly accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 8.2 or 8.1 seconds, respectively. It is not surprising that the version with the 10.3-kWh battery is heavier: it weighs 208 kg, while the slimmer variant weighs 197 kg.

All X-47 models feature two-channel ABS from Bosch, four-stage traction control, dynamic stability control, hill start assist, and ten-stage adjustable recuperation. The electric bike can also move backward slowly for maneuvering. Ultraviolette promotes the X-47 with its standard radar, which warns of rear-end collisions and overtaking maneuvers, and enables a blind spot warning and a lane keeping assistant. These assistance systems can be viewed on a five-inch TFT display with smartphone connectivity.

In India, Ultraviolette offers the X-47 with a 7.1-kWh battery for the equivalent of 2330 Euros, and with 10.3 kWh for 3270 Euros. A variant called "Desert Wing" includes not only beige paintwork but also saddlebags and a dash cam. The brand grants a three-year or 30,000 km warranty on its electric motorcycles. It is not yet known when and at what price Ultraviolette will import the X-47 to Germany. The F77 Mach2 street motorcycle from Ultraviolette, already available here, costs around 10,000 Euros.
