It is electric and comes from Thuringia: E-scooter manufacturer Emco E-Roller is reviving the traditional small motorcycle Schwalbe. It is to be produced at the historic site.
The company from Lingen in Emsland has according to its own statements signed "a letter of intent for license takeover" of the Schwalbe brand. In addition, a production hall in Suhl has been rented. It is located in the Heinrichs district on the historic grounds of the manufacturer Simson, which built the Schwalbe from the mid-1960s onwards.
Production of the historic Schwalbe ended in 1986. 30 years later, the Munich-based company Govecs brought the Schwalbe back in an electric version. The two-wheeler, whose design had clear echoes of the original, was produced in Poland. However, Govecs had to file for insolvency at the end of last year, and production was discontinued.
The Schwalbe is revived
Now Emco wants to start it again. "The Schwalbe must get air under its wings again – in Suhl," said Yasmin von Schweinitz, co-owner of Emco. "Our goal is not only to revive an icon, but to consistently lead it into the future."
Emco E-Roller has taken over brands of electric scooters from several insolvent manufacturers recently. These include, among others, Unu from the Berlin-based company of the same name or Kumpan, known for electric scooters in a retro look.
