Image character generator: genmojis should get better in iOS 27
So far, Apple Intelligence is apparently being used too little. One of the generative AI features is now supposed to become prettier.

Among the Apple Intelligence features introduced in fall 2024 are two image generators. While Image Playground works like competing systems such as DALL-E or Nano Banana (albeit technically much more limited), the so-called Genmojis are a direct part of the iOS and iPadOS keyboard, as well as deeply integrated into macOS. The idea behind it: Users should be able to create their own image characters via prompt. So far, this works better sometimes and worse other times. With iOS 27, the technology is planned to be advanced, reports the financial news agency Bloomberg: A larger Genmoji update is pending.
First combinations, now suggestions
According to internal Apple information, the AI-generated image characters are apparently being used well – at least within the scope of Apple Intelligence's limited success. Problems such as a not-so-clever implementation of prompts, high-power consumption, especially on the iPhone due to the use of local models, and general ugliness in finding representations are to be fixed in the future, according to the report. Initial improvements, such as combining multiple emojis into one genmoji from iOS 26, are to be continued.
For example, Apple plans to automatically suggest genmojis in the future – similar to what is already known from regular emojis. “Suggested genmojis are created from your photos and frequently entered sentences,” it says in a settings menu in iOS 27 and iPadOS 27. However, the feature is said to be optional and may not be active immediately for privacy reasons.

Censorship problems with Genmojis
Whether Apple will also fix another issue is rather unlikely: the quite strict guardrails within the scope of allowed prompts. Users feel these when terms are used that Apple Intelligence considers problematic. Then the generation of an image character is simply rejected.
Unlike providers such as OpenAI, Apple offers no way to contact support in such cases – or at least to draw attention to the fact that a harmless prompt led to censorship. Another issue causes Genmoji generation to continue only if you give the system a photo of a known person, which many users will probably be reluctant to do.
