Electric car: Renault announces start of ordering, prices and options for the R5
The long-awaited small electric car from Renault will initially cost almost 33,000 euros with large battery and high performance. It will become cheaper in 2025

After a six-month delay, the electric R5 can now be ordered: officially from the end of the month and since May 21 by holders of a so-called R5 Pass, which Renault had issued in advance for 150 euros. The five trim levels planned are Five, Evolution, Techno, Iconic Five and the special Roland Garros model.
From the end of the month, the R5 will initially only be available to order as the Techno and Iconic Five, in five different colors and with 52 kWh net, 90 or 110 kW power and 410 km range in the WLTP. The entry-level price is 32,900 euros or a monthly private customer leasing rate of 279 euros (with 48 months, 40,000 km and 5100 euros down payment). All other models will be available to order "from 2025", plus a cheaper version from 24,900 euros, which owes its price to a 40 kWh battery with a range of 300 kilometers and a choice of 70 or 90 kW weaker motors.

11 kW, bidirectional after all
The DC on-board charger allows up to 100 kW to be charged at correspondingly powerful fast charging stations. According to Renault, the battery can be charged from 15 to 80 percent of its capacity in 30 minutes at best. A bidirectional 11 kW charger for alternating current is standard in the 110 and 90 kW engine versions. This allows external electrical appliances with up to 3.7 kW power to be operated on the R5 and electricity to be fed into the grid. The entry-level model with 70 kW does without this.
Renault will not offer the option of a 22 kW charger, which is disappointing for occasional chargers who like to use breaks in their journey, for example to go shopping, to recharge as much as possible in between. A heat pump, on the other hand, is fitted as standard, allowing the NMC batteries to be preconditioned for faster charging. Waste heat can also be used for heating to save energy.

Optional modern assistance
Other standard features of the models initially available include a reversing camera, adaptive cruise control with curve and traffic circle detection and a Google-based multimedia system with electric car route planner. Among other things, a reversing emergency brake assistant, an emergency lane departure warning system and an exit assistant can be ordered.

The front-wheel drive compact car with multi-link suspension on both axles measures 3.92 m, with a wheelbase of 2.54 m and a width of 1.77 m, but still offers a good 326 liter trunk volume. The R5 can also tow trailers weighing up to 500 kg. Overall, the upcoming R5 offers more and better equipment options than the recently released Citroën ë-C3 for 23,300 euros (driving report) or the significantly more expensive Opel Corsa electric (test). What the VW ID.2, which is not expected until 2026, will be able to do in a similar format is hardly foreseeable today.
