French media associations have called on Apple not to integrate an ad blocker into Safari. The function is only a rumor so far.

Even before the unveiling of iOS 18, an expected function is causing a considerable stir: Several major French media associations have written to Apple boss Tim Cook urging him not to implement a "Web Eraser" expected for the Safari browser under any circumstances, as reported by French newspaper Les Echos. The associations argue that the function is tantamount to a standard integrated ad blocker and poses a direct threat to ad-financed content.
Publishers see a threat to democracy
Not only publishers and journalists are threatened by this, but ultimately also pluralism and democracy. If the economic model of the media is weakened, this will lead to a loss of high-quality information.
According to a report, Apple's Safari browser will receive a range of AI functions with iOS 18, including page summaries. A "web eraser" is also being discussed, which will allegedly allow users to directly "delete" or permanently hide certain elements of a website - including advertising banners. Similar functions can already be found in ad blockers. The Apple function has not yet been confirmed. The company will be presenting its new operating systems, including Safari 18, at WWDC on June 10.

The EU has also been informed
The associations have also sent the letter to EU Commissioner Thierry Breton. According to the letter, the planned function raises questions about the extent to which Apple is simultaneously strengthening its own advertising business in the App Store and Apple News with such a "web eraser". Some publishers are reminded of Apple's introduction of a tracking warning in apps, which potentially led to huge financial losses for individual providers and advertising companies. Before the French publishers, British media companies had already taken a stand against Apple's "Web Eraser".
