Restore and USB-C: Developer Strap for Vision Pro reaches Germany
By default, Apple's headset can only be accessed wirelessly. A special cable is required for direct access. This is coming to Germany. It is expensive.

Just like Apple's lenses for the Vision Pro from Zeiss, other accessories for the headset are now also coming to Germany. This includes Apple's Vision Pro travel bag, the battery case from Belkin, additional batteries for the glasses, light seals in various sizes including pads and the Solo Loop and Dual Loop headbands. Special hardware is now also available: The so-called Developer Strap. However, there are a few requirements that need to be met.
What the developer strap can do
With the Developer Strap, also known as the Dev Strap for short, you can add a USB-C connection to the Vision Pro. By default, the headset can only be connected wirelessly. The only cable attached to it is the power supply cable. Although the battery pack itself has a USB-C port, this is not used for data transfer, but only for charging (or direct power supply during operation). If you are working with a visionOS beta, for example, you cannot delete it or restore the device to its original state. This is only possible with a connected Mac and the Dev Strap.

There are also other special functions. These include the option of routing Ethernet directly to the Vision Pro, which is possible via USB 2.0 in full-duplex mode at 100 Mbps. Power is not provided via the developer ribbon. Files can also be transferred faster via the tape and mobile device management (MDM) should be easier. There is also a more stable Mac Virtual Display mode. Although this normally also runs smoothly via WLAN, using cables avoids any router and wireless weaknesses. Furthermore, the Dev Strap in conjunction with the Xcode tools allows simplified (because more stable) testing of graphics-intensive apps.
How to get the Dev Strap
As the name suggests, Apple unfortunately only sells the Developer Strap to developers. Previously, you had to have a paid developer account (Apple Developer Program, 99 US dollars per year) and an address in the USA to purchase it. Now, a paid developer account (can also be an enterprise account) and an address in a country where the Vision Pro will be sold from July 12 is sufficient. In Europe, this includes Germany, France and the UK, but Austria and Switzerland are not yet included.
If your own developer account meets these requirements, you can access the order area via this link. After entering your account details, you will find out whether you are eligible to purchase. The developer band is not cheap: in this country, Apple would like a whopping 329 euros (US price without tax: 299 dollars). In any case, delivery will take place after July 12, but the order window has already been moved up to July 15-16.
