With the release of the new iPhone 16 models next Friday, Apple is also making some changes to mobile phone support. However, these do not affect all markets – and in other cases everything remains the same. An overview.
New WLAN, old SIM
Apple is including support for Wi-Fi 7 as standard with all iPhone 16 – models, i.e. 16, 16 Plus, 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max –. There had already been rumors about this in advance. The new Wi-Fi standard promises the transmission of data over several bands simultaneously (2.4, 5 and 6 GHz) and lower latency with suitable routers. The maximum speed has also been increased, but is only likely to be reached in rare cases (40 gigabits per second). According to the specifications, Apple uses 802.11be with 2x2 MIMO.

In terms of SIM, however, there are no changes. While only eSIMs are installed in the iPhone 16 in the USA, meaning that physical SIM cards cannot be used, the EU models retain the slot. This is also available in the UK, Canada, Australia, Japan, China, New Zealand and Singapore, and will continue to support a nano-SIM as usual. In the USA, Apple had already done away with SIM slots with the iPhone 14 and opted for eSIMs only.
5G faster, but no mmWave
Progress is said to have been made with 5G support thanks to the Snapdragon X75 modem installed in the Pro models. According to initial reports, the maximum throughput in US wireless networks has increased by up to 25 percent. The Snapdragon X70 is apparently still being used in the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus. However, Apple does not comment on which Qualcomm series the company uses. The company has been working on its own 5G chips for years. However, they are not expected to be available before 2025 and will probably first appear in the fourth-generation iPhone SE.
5G mmWave technology, which promises significantly higher download rates, is still not available outside the USA, but is still not supported by many mobile phone providers, or only to a limited extent. Apple is also reserving the technology for its US models of the iPhone 16, where it has been available since the iPhone 12. Incidentally, a specific mmWave antenna is no longer visible from the outside. The new camera control is supposed to be in its place.
