Introducing the Mini Convertible 2025: What remains is what was

Mini has largely retained the concept of a small convertible in the new model. There are major changes in the infotainment area.

Convertibles are now rare on the German market. As my colleague Clemens recently mused after a drive in a Mazda MX-5, this is no doubt partly due to the fact that the majority don't know (anymore?) how beautiful they actually are. Growth is therefore very welcome, and the BMW brand Mini is making an attractive contribution with the next edition.

Even with this model change, those responsible have refrained from trying to completely reinvent the car. Both visually and conceptually, much remains the same as before. The dimensions remain well under four meters in length (3.88 m) and a classic fabric top. This can be opened in 18 seconds up to a vehicle speed of 30 km/h, with the driver having two options: He can have it folded back completely or open only over the head. This gap is then 40 cm long. The space on the rear seats and in the trunk remains modest. It holds 160 to 215 liters, depending on whether the soft top is open or closed.

The greatest progress has been made in the area of entertainment electronics. At this point, Mini is catching up with other current BMW models. A large round OLED screen sits in the middle, with powerful hardware behind it. In the three-door model, the system impressed with its comprehensible voice control, swift reactions and razor-sharp display. In the convertible, an additional component becomes interesting: how well the display can be read when sunlight falls directly on it.

At the start of sales in February 2025, Mini will be offering the convertible with three four-cylinder engines. Even the base model has 120 kW, which accelerates the small car to 100 km/h in 8.2 seconds and allows it to reach speeds of up to 220 km/h. For many, a little less would certainly be more than enough – especially in a decelerating convertible. The next level in the hierarchy delivers 150 kW and, at 300, offers another 50 Nm more than the base model. This enables a standard sprint time of 6.9 seconds and up to 237 km/h. For both variants, Mini states a fuel consumption of 6.5 to 6.6 liters in the WLTP.

There is no official information yet on the "performance-oriented" JCW model. However, a glance at the Mini range gives an idea of the direction it is likely to take. The current Mini Countryman JCW is powered by a two-liter petrol engine with an output of 221 kW. It is possible that this engine will also be used in the convertible. It will also be exciting to see whether BMW responds to the very positive response to the electric Mini Convertible. This was initially presented as a one-off, followed by a Mini series of 999 units in 2023, which quickly sold out despite a price of around 60,000 euros. It should be an incentive to offer the new convertible with at least one electric drive. The appeal of this combination was impressively demonstrated by a Fiat[ ]500 with a roll-top in the editorial office.

When the convertible goes on sale from February 2025, the list prices will be significantly lower. The basic model will be offered from 31,200 euros, but as is usual with Mini, the price is likely to go up significantly even with low equipment requirements.
