Hand on heart: how often have you seen a BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé in the wild in this country? Unless there are special circumstances, this is probably the absolute exception. Why BMW is nevertheless sticking with this model series and, depending on how you read it, is now giving it a major overhaul or completely renewing it, can be easily explained by looking beyond the borders of the EU: The BMW sedan is definitely in demand in the USA and China. Five years after its launch, the model series is being updated.

BMW has not radically altered the previous design. The sedan has become 2 cm longer and now measures just under 4.55 m. However, there is no more space for passengers, as the wheelbase remains unchanged at 2.67 m. The height has increased by 2.5 cm to 1.45 m. Whether the BMW kidney grille positioned below the headlights and the lower air intake result in a "flat appearance inclined towards the road", as BMW describes it, I leave to the reader's judgment. The trunk remains meagre, with a capacity of only between 360 and 430 liters, depending on the engine. The first press photos show a fully equipped version with the "M Sport package", while the base model with 17-inch wheels, which can be seen in the configurator, looks considerably simpler. Unlike new models from the 5 Series upwards, the optional glass roof can be opened in this BMW.

Inside, the revised 2 Series Gran Coupé now resembles the recently presented 1 Series. Here, too, two large displays and the OS9 operating system introduced last year dominate. As is now customary, BMW no longer offers the full range of extras for all equipment lines. A black headliner or a sports steering wheel are not available for the base model, other things are only available in packages. These include, for example, a high beam assistant or the inductive charging cradle.

BMW has also thinned out the range of engines somewhat. Two petrol and two diesel engines remain. There is no longer a manual gearbox, and all-wheel drive is only available for the most powerful petrol engine in the M235. Alternatives for burning liquid fuel are not to be expected on this basis; the 220 and 220d are mild hybrids with 48-volt starter generators. The provisional range is as follows:

Model Consumption WLTP Power (kW) Torque (Nm) Trunk (liters)
220 5,2 bis 5,8 115 240 360
M235 xDrive 7,5 bis 8,2 221 400 430
218d 4,6 bis 5 110 360 430
220d 4,2 bis 4,6 120 400 360

Further engines are conceivable; after all, there is still a 116 with 90 kW and a 123 with 160 kW in the 1 Series, which shares the platform with the 2 Series Gran Coupé. In view of the rather low customer demand so far, an expansion in this country is not very likely. The 2 Series Gran Coupé will be built in Leipzig and sales of the revised version will start in March 2025. The least expensive model, the 220, costs 41,400 euros, while the diesel in the 218d is hardly more expensive at 41,700 euros. For comparison: a 120 currently costs at least 37,900 euros.
