Child seats in the test: Two failures in the pollutant test

In a recent test, the ADAC examined 17 child seats. Hardly any of them were found to be weaker in terms of safety.

The requirements that a child seat must meet in order to receive a good overall rating from ADAC have been tightened up from time to time in recent years.

Car seats for children have become an expensive affair. A number of child seats in the latest ADAC test cost more than 500 euros. It is therefore worth comparing prices, as children do not always sit worse in a less expensive seat. However, parents should not go below a certain mark when making a purchase.

First the good news: the ADAC tested 17 child seats, and in the "Safety" section, "satisfactory" was the worst grade awarded. In the past decades that the club has been testing child car seats, far worse ratings have been awarded in this respect –, even though the test requirements have been tightened up time and again. Most of the seats in the test achieved a "good" rating. Five seats only achieved a "satisfactory". There are clear differences in operation, and this point should not be neglected. Because only a correctly installed seat can fully develop its safety potential. Here, some manufacturers make it unnecessarily difficult for parents. As Isofix hooks have been mandatory in new cars for some time now, we would always give preference to such models.

The pollutant load of most seats is inconspicuous. However, there are three striking outliers in this discipline. The "Britax Römer Evolvafix" only achieved a "satisfactory" – - an astonishing result, as other seats from this manufacturer perform well to very well. The same applies to the "Maxi-Cosi Rodfix M", which is also the only seat from this manufacturer to have too high pollutant values and therefore receives the grade "sufficient". The "Graco Snuglite i-Size" –, a seat that scores well in terms of safety, fails completely in this discipline.

The Doona child seat has an integrated chassis and can therefore also be used as a baby carriage. This is practical because there is no need to transport a baby carriage in the car. However, the ADAC recommends that the Doona seat should not be used permanently as a baby carriage – The seating position is at an angle. Obviously, the seat is also somewhat heavier than others. At 720 euros, the practical combination of child seat and pushchair is also quite expensive.

A chassis is integrated into the Doona child seat. This is practical, but must be worth more than 700 euros to the parents.
