iPhone 17 "Slim": Fresh details from a well-known analyst
Details on the new iPhone for fall 2025 leak, revealing Apple's plans for a thinner design.
You'll have to wait a while longer for the iPhone 17 Slim - if Apple doesn't give it a different name.
Dinner from the top Apple rumor cook from Taiwan: Ming-Chi Kuo, analyst at TF International Securities, has served up fresh news on the (uber) next Apple top model at the end of the working day in Germany. The usually well-informed market observer believes that Apple could focus on form over function with the "iPhone 17 Slim" aka "iPhone 17 Ultra".
Slim with one camera
As Kuo wrote in a new report to investors, Apple will use the Slim instead of the iPhone 17 Plus. The "ultra-slim" model is set to be released in the second half of 2025 - presumably in September as usual - and will be a very special device. It should cover "trends beyond the current iPhone line-up" and shine with design and an innovative form factor instead of competing on hardware specifications, i.e. processor or camera. Accordingly, it will not be the most powerful model of 2025; the iPhone 17 Pro Max will retain this role.
Instead, Apple is relying on a new 6.6-inch screen with "approximately" 2740 x 1260 pixels, which is rather elongated. The SoC is the upcoming A19, i.e. specifically not the highest A19 Pro chip from the Pro models. The Dynamic Island should be similar to current models. A frame made of a titanium-aluminum alloy is said to contain less titanium than the current Pro models, while the other iPhone 17 models are said to return to aluminum. The camera of the flat device will reportedly only have a single design due to its thinness: As a single image sensor in wide format (wide angle). (Apple has been using at least two cameras for years, three in the Pro models).
5G finally from Apple?
Details on the exact thickness of the device remain unclear. Kuo did not provide any new information here. According to reports from China, it is said to be thicker than the 13-inch iPad Pro M3. However, this is not necessarily true. The single camera in particular could help Apple to save space. However, it would also mean that the iPhone 17 Slim would not be able to record spatial videos. Until now, it was said that Apple would sell the thin device for at least 100 US dollars more than the iPhone 17 Pro Max. It would therefore be the top model, at least in terms of price.
Also interesting: Kuo claims to have heard that Apple has finally managed to produce a 5G chip that comes from its own company - or at least expects to do so by next year. Kuo also wrote at X that another model will also come with Apple 5G next year: the iPhone SE 4. According to the analyst, it is scheduled for the first quarter of 2025. This would mean that Apple would say goodbye to its dependence on Qualcomm, if this does not already happen this year.
