Apple on ChatGPT integration: Don't worry, it's coming
The betas of iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1 and macOS 15.1 do not yet contain Apple's promised ChatGPT integration. It will take a little longer.

Anyone who has had the chance to test Apple Intelligence on an iPhone 15 Pro during visits outside the EU has unfortunately discovered that the developer beta of iOS 18.1 does not yet have the direct integration of ChatGPT promised by Apple. Why this is the case has so far remained unclear - the Siri voice assistant simply does not offer the alternative voice model. Apple has now clarified when the function will be available.
End of the calendar year
During the announcement of its quarterly figures on Thursday, the company told analysts that the integration will take place for iOS 18, iPadOS 18 and macOS 15 Sequoia "by the end of the calendar year". Apple did not provide any further timeframes. Overall, it looks as though Apple will be taking a gradual approach to the launch of Apple Intelligence this year. As expected, iOS 18.0 is still planned for September, but IOS 18.1 with Apple Intelligence, which can now be tested by developers in parallel, could not arrive until October.
This is also the opinion of well-known Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman. It is conceivable that ChatGPT will still not be available until then and will not actually arrive until the next update before the end of 2024 - or will simply be rolled out by Apple as a server-side update as soon as the company believes the function is ready.
ChatGPT not without controversy
Apple relies primarily on its own language models for Apple Intelligence, which generate their results either locally or using Apple's own private cloud compute servers. ChatGPT is only an additional model. It is to be offered by Siri if the system thinks it might be worthwhile for the user. A direct call is also possible. Apple also plans to integrate other voice models such as Google Gemini. The company apparently also wants to avoid problems with regulation.
Some fear that ChatGPT in iOS 18 could pose a data protection problem. However, Apple emphasizes that requests are made anonymously - even if it is possible to log in with your OpenAI account. X boss Elon Musk has already threatened to ban iPhones from his companies due to the ChatGPT integration because he fears that data could be leaked.
