iOS 18.2: Five features we're waiting for until the end of the year
OS 18.1 is supposed to bring – at least outside the EU – parts of Apple Intelligence. However, a number of features will probably be postponed until December.
New home screen in iOS 18 – This function is already coming in September.
It is already known that the new iPhone 16 models, which will be released on September 20, will be delivered without Apple Intelligence –, including in Apple's home market, the USA. The company will then release iOS 18.1 in October, which will include the so-called Writing Tools. However, not all features are included in this version either. Instead, we will have to wait for iOS 18.2, Apple has now confirmed – and this is not expected before the end of the year, probably in December. It is now clear which functions are involved.
Image generators are still missing
The image generators announced by Apple are not expected until iOS 18.2. These are the so-called Image Playground and the Genmoji function. The "Image Playground" is Apple's actual image generator, which exists as a separate app as well as integrated into apps. "Create fun, original images in seconds with the Image Playground directly in your apps. Generate a completely new image based on a description, suggested concepts and even a person from your photo library," is how the manufacturer describes the feature. However, photorealistic graphics are not included in order to avoid deepfakes.
Apple's second image generator Genmoji creates your own emojis as desired. If you want a clown riding a unicorn, for example, you can now have one. Here too, you can use images from the photo library as a model. Apple has just shown the US magazine Wired what a picture from the Image Playground can look like in the current version: A "birthday picture" of software boss Craig Federighi's dog was demonstrated there.
Adapted English, ChatGPT integration
Furthermore, customized English versions of Apple Intelligence will only appear with iOS 18.2. Apple has officially set a date of "December" and plans to cover the UK, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and Canada. Other languages will probably not be added before next year; Apple has not yet commented on German. However, French, Spanish, Japanese and Chinese have been announced for 2025.
The ChatGPT integration, which will become part of Siri (on request), is also not expected to arrive until iOS 18.2. This has also been announced "by the end of the year", which will probably be December. Users will also have to be patient when it comes to Siri improvements: Although iOS 18.1 already contains initial optimizations including a new look, important features such as reading the screen or more app context will not arrive before 2025 – Again, no one officially knows what will happen with Germany.
