iPhone 16: What we already know about the next generation of Apple smartphones

Four new iPhone 16 models are currently expected to be launched on the market in around two months. Apple is likely to tweak the form factor, but the models will still be called iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max. However, a fifth (high-end) model called iPhone 17 Slim could be added in 2025.
New SoC for all iPhones
It already seems clear that Apple will equip all four new iPhone 16 models with the new A18 SoC. This would be a real upgrade for the standard models, as Apple has always used the SoC generation from the previous year. This year, however, the company apparently wants all devices to be up to date - presumably also due to the marketing of Apple Intelligence. According to leaks, the four new models have the identifiers iPhone17,1, iPhone17,2, iPhone17,3, iPhone17,4 and iPhone 17,5 (one of which could stand for a new iPhone SE, which is not expected before 2025). For comparison: the current four iPhone 15 models are internally called "iPhone15,4" and "iPhone 15,5" (iPhone 15 and 15 Plus) as well as "iPhone16,1" and "iPhone16,2" (iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max).
However, this does not mean that all devices are equally powerful. Apple could install a standard version of the A18 in the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus, while the iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max could use an "A18 Pro" with more power and possibly more RAM. Benchmarks will show the concrete effects of this. Apple is said to have high hopes for sales of the iPhone 16 and ordered between 90 and 100 million chips from chip manufacturer TSMC in the first round - 10 million units more than the iPhone 15, according to analysts.
Growth for iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max
The iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max are to have a larger screen with a smaller display edge. The devices will reportedly grow to 6.3 and 6.9 inches respectively. The action button will be included in all models, while an additional "Capture Button" is planned for the Pro and Pro Max, which could be used for taking photos or starting a video recording, for example.
It is conceivable that Apple will finally switch its buttons to solid state. iPhone 16 and 16 Plus are to receive a new camera arrangement so that they can also record spatial videos for the Vision Pro. The lenses are mounted next to each other. Wi-Fi 7 level WLAN is planned for all devices.
MagSafe, display, camera
Apple is also working on thinner MagSafe magnets, which in turn could help to make the housings even thinner. However, the weight of the devices could increase slightly, especially the larger Pro models. The OLED screens should be somewhat brighter and more energy-efficient thanks to micro-lens array technology. The thinner screen edges mentioned above could be the result of new OLED terminations with Border Reduction Structure (BRS). Faster 5G chips - still from Qualcomm- are also expected. It remains to be seen whether mmWave support will come to Europe, as this is currently only supported for industrial applications anyway.
The Pro models will reportedly switch to the Snapdragon X75. There are also some changes to the cameras. The ultra-wide-angle module is to be brighter by adopting the "super pixels" from the wide-angle sensor. The telephoto lens is to be used in both Pro models and not just in the Pro Max model. There were also rumors about a "super periscope" lens with significantly more optical zoom. However, nothing has been heard here for some time. Apple is reportedly relying on a stacked battery design, which promises a little more capacity. The battery could be housed in a new stainless steel casing, which allows a higher energy density but is also easier to replace.
