Apple releases public betas of iOS 18, macOS 15 and co

Let the testing begin: Interested parties have been able to try out Apple's new 2024 operating systems since late Monday. According to Apple's official public beta website, iOS 18, iPadOS 18, macOS 15 aka Sequoia, tvOS 18 and watchOS 11 are now available. Apple has also released the new software for its connected speaker, HomePod OS 18, as a public preview version. However, the new firmware for the AirPods with some useful features is not available for private users - the firmware cannot be easily reset without Apple's help.

Beta test is not for everyone

Anyone can take part in Apple's public beta, and developers have already had three pre-release versions since the beginning of June. Nevertheless, users should think carefully about whether they want to go to all the trouble. Betas contain bugs - these preview phases exist to eliminate them. Accordingly, testers should make diligent use of Apple's feedback assistant if they discover problems.

In addition, data loss can never be ruled out with beta versions. Separate devices are therefore advisable for beta tests. Cautious users should also use their own Apple ID and iCloud account to protect themselves from potential problems and avoid working with real data. Of course, there are plenty of users who simply jump into the beta test - they should know that Apple will not be held liable if there are any errors, as the tests are completely voluntary.

The new features in iOS 18, macOS 15 and co.

The most important new features in iOS 18 and iPadOS 18 are a redesigned, much more configurable home screen, new communication options such as iMessage via satellite and RCS, a new password manager, a fresh Control Center, various improvements in the Messages app and - as the main feature - generative AI in various areas. However, Apple Intelligence cannot yet be tested.

Apple Intelligence will also be available under macOS 15, the system settings have been redesigned, there are more options for window management, an iPhone mirroring function (not yet in the EU) and a new password manager. Apple has also introduced changes to Photos, Safari and numerous other programs. WatchOS 11 improves health functions, allows you to skip days of training for the first time and brings apps for vital signs and pregnancy information. tvOS 18 provides additional information about films, SharePlay functions, improved camera support for video chats and much more. The release versions will appear in the fall, probably in September.
