According to a report, Apple has confirmed that the new GPT-5 model from OpenAI will also be coming to iPhone & Co. According to 9to5Mac, this will take place via the operating system integration of ChatGPT, which is part of Apple Intelligence. However, interested parties will have to wait a little longer. Apparently, nothing will happen before the release of iOS 26 and the other new systems in the fall. GPT-5 can currently already be used via the ChatGPT-App on iPhone, iPad, and Mac, but not via Apple's in-house integration of the OpenAI AI system.
OpenAI should deliver "world knowledge"
The iPhone manufacturer is currently still using GPT-4o in iOS 18, iPadOS 18, macOS 15, and visionOS 2. The model can be switched on if desired but does not have to be used. According to Apple, the aim is to add “world knowledge” to the in-house models, which can be used to reformulate and summarize texts, for example. Apple users will also be able to use OpenAI image generators, which will become part of Image Playground in the future.

According to 9to5Mac, GPT-5 will be usable in iOS 26, iPadOS 26, and macOS 26 alias Tahoe. The updates are currently expected in mid- to late-September. It is still unclear whether Apple users will be able to choose whether they want to continue using the older GPT-4o model instead of GPT-5. OpenAI had forced free users to switch to GPT-5 for a short time, with no option to return. Access to the old model has since been restored – but only for paying Plus users.
Rumors about internal model change
Apple is known to have major difficulties in advancing Apple Intelligence. The company has had to postpone improved Siri functions until next year, and a real, LLM-supported voice assistant is still in the stars. The AI team at the company is also constantly losing employees to the competition, particularly from the all-important Foundational Model team, which creates Apple's own basic model.
In the summer, it was said that Apple could consider switching to a purchased basic model, such as the one from Anthropic. Apple CEO Tim Cook continued to emphasize as recently as August that Apple was prepared to spend a lot of money on an AI acquisition. The only question is which company is up for sale. There is said to have been interest in Perplexity, for example, but the AI search specialist is by no means uncontroversial.
