The Federal Motor Transport Authority (Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt, KBA) is taking another step towards digitalization and is introducing the Digital Examination Report (Digitaler Untersuchungsbericht, DUB). This report contains "relevant content of the examination report on the main inspection," which can be used as a file starting today. The KBA developed this solution on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Transport (Bundesministerium für Verkehr, BMV). It is intended to supplement the inspection report, which has so far been issued in paper form, whenever and wherever it is useful for the vehicle operator. In principle, the DUB can be used like the paper document, but it does not yet completely replace the printed examination report on the main inspection.

From today, main inspection data for all main inspections carried out from November 25, 2025, onwards can be accessed online and shared digitally. However, inspections already documented by the KBA are not yet digitally available there. The Digital Examination Report can be accessed via a QR code, a link, or manually via the KBA website. The access data consists of the examination report number for the main inspection, the key number of the monitoring institution, and an identification number.

The DUB can be passed on any number of times, for example, to document the vehicle's condition when selling it, but sharing can be revoked at any time by changing the access data. The relevant content of the examination report on the main inspection is available digitally in German and, "for technical reasons," as the KBA writes, however, "not completely also in English."

Since the DUB is not a component of the recently introduced i-Kfz app, it can be used independently of it. Unlike the Online Register Inquiry (Online-Registerauskunft, ORA), the DUB does not require personal data (eID). The digital document is issued based on the regulations of §§ 29, 29a of the StVZO (German Road Traffic Licensing Regulations) and Annex VIII, supplemented by the Verkehrsblattverlautbarung 2025 p. 162 on the procedure for retrieving relevant data on main inspections ("HU-Daten").
