VW ID.2: Start of series production brought forward
VW will officially present the ID.2 this year and sell it from early 2025. The small e-car will therefore be launched earlier than expected.

The market for small electric cars is on the move: Stellantis and Renault already have corresponding models in their range, and the Volkswagen Group wants to follow suit. Originally, the series version of the ID.2 was not due to be presented until 2025, but VW is now bringing the premiere forward. The battery-electric small car will be shown this year, with sales set to begin in 2025, reports the British portal Autocar.
Spacious inside
The final design has reportedly already been finalized and is likely to be similar to the study shown last year. This also applies to the dimensions. According to this, the ID.2 and its expected derivatives from Skoda and Seat will be 4.05 m long, roughly the same length as a current VW Polo. However, at 2.6 m, the wheelbase is significantly longer than that of the Polo, which tends to promise a good amount of space. VW gives the trunk volume as 490 liters, which would be an enormous figure in this class. For orientation: a VW ID.3, which is around 20 cm longer, offers only 380 liters, a VW Polo 350 liters.
Two batteries
Two batteries are planned. In the entry-level model, we expect lithium iron phosphate cells (LFÜ) and an energy content of slightly less than 40 kWh. In conjunction with the larger battery, which relies on a mix of nickel, manganese and cobalt for the cell chemistry, around 55 kWh is expected. Under the conditions of the WLTP, a range of 450 km should be possible.

Environment of the ID.2
VW has decided to offer the base model for around 25,000 euros. The offshoots from Skoda and Seat or Cupra, which we also expect to launch in the next 18 months, are likely to be priced just below the ID.2. Direct competitors include the technically interesting Renault R5 and the Citroën ë-C3, on the basis of which further models from the Stellantis group will follow. We expect corresponding offers from Peugeot, Fiat, DS and Opel.
