Vision Pro: Apple's plans for the coming years

Following the launch of the Vision Pro in other countries in June and July, Apple's first mixed reality headset has remained rather quiet: visionOS 2, for example, which is due to be released in the fall, is not really a big hit - and it is still unclear if and when a cheaper version of the device will be released. According to a report by Bloomberg, however, at least two new models are being planned; one of them, the cheaper version, also known simply as "Vision" in the rumor mill, is allegedly already scheduled for 2025.
It's all about the price
Apple appears to be planning to price the new headset in the range of a more expensive iPhone model. And these are known to range from 1500 to (almost / over) 2000 euros. However, Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman fears that a device that is no cheaper than 1500 US dollars will continue to be a niche product. By way of comparison, the Vision Pro currently costs at least 4000 euros, while the Quest 3 from Meta costs just 550 euros to get started.

However, Apple is also working on "real" augmented reality glasses that are significantly lighter and more compact than the Vision (Pro). However, this remains a technical problem because Apple does not have enough displays available and the Apple Silicon SoCs require sufficient space. However, the company is also interested in the idea of glasses without a screen, writes Bloomberg. These would be based on the glasses from Meta and Ray-Ban, for example, which, according to Meta, are set to be "a bigger hit than expected".

In addition to the high price, the Vision Pro also suffers from its positioning: is the headset purely an entertainment device or is it intended for productivity? Apple itself emphasizes both. The manufacturer has recently increased its range of immersive content, which is very costly to produce. Vision Pro app providers such as Disney+ and Paramount+ delivered new "environments". At the same time, the company is recruiting professional users for Vision Pro among corporate groups.
The integration of Macs into the Vision Pro interface will be improved with visionOS 2; at the same time, Microsoft is also working on an integration of Remote Desktop for the headset. This would make it possible to control Windows machines remotely.
