Test electric car Mercedes EQE 350+: Long-range thanks to low resistance

The EQE is not a sports car. If desired, and with the recommendable rear-axle steering, it can be turned very quickly through tight bends. Insert: With this steering system, which is available at extra cost, the turning circle also shrinks from 12.5 to 10.7  metres, which helps when parking. Nevertheless, the EQE is not a wild dynamic. It is a Mercedes through and through, and that means above all comfort and safety. After hundreds of kilometres, you get out of the comfortable seats more relaxed than in other cars in this class.

The recuperation power of the EQE 350+ is up to 186 kW. It is worth activating the automatic ("intelligent") mode after starting by pulling on the two steering wheel rockers. This is really fascinating: the Mercedes glides along almost without resistance. As soon as another vehicle (whether a car or a bicycle) is identified ahead, the EQE decelerates specifically via the electric motor and in stop-and-go traffic even to a standstill. This works similarly in front of bends, and everything is so intuitive and imperceptible that many drivers don't even notice it. The fact that the rest of the assistance systems are also of the highest standard is self-explanatory. No bugs, no phantom braking, nothing is annoying here.

The test car did not have the Hyperscreen, which combines three displays under a seemingly common, huge cover glass. The EQE was equipped with the usual MBUX. From my point of view, the conclusion is clear: the extremely expensive Hyperscreen is dispensable. Particularly as it also shows a little more wood, which in turn reminds one of old Mercedes times and repeatedly of the CLS. Functionally, at least, there is hardly any difference, except that the front passenger has no screen to play with.

The hyperscreen is overrated. The conventional cockpit serves every purpose, and besides, there is room for more wood.

The interior space in the 4.95-metre-long and 1.96-metre-wide Mercedes EQE is huge. No wonder with a wheelbase of 3.12 metres. The luggage compartment volume, on the other hand, falls considerably short at 430 litres according to the VDA standard. That's not much more than an Opel Astra (test) offers, and it's about 60 cm shorter.

The EQE is surprisingly close to the luxurious EQS when it comes to the sum of its features. As always with Mercedes, it is possible to order all kinds of fripperies in addition to sensible extras. In the case of the test car, this resulted in 100,091 euros. An EQS driven in February came to 200,152 euros. As described, the gross entry price is 63,427 euros minus 5000 euros BAFA premium. For 58,427 euros, there is a lot of electric car and a Mercedes to go with it. Navigation system, heated seats and LED headlights come as standard.

The EQE is undoubtedly not a cheap car, which is probably not what anyone expected from Mercedes. But compared to the E-Class, which will no longer be available as a sedan until the upcoming model change in 2023, the EQE does not even seem overly expensive: an E300 sedan with 190 kW cost 58,375 euros at the end, without offering anything even remotely comparable in terms of drive comfort.

The EQE fulfils the expectations placed on a Mercedes. It is not only a very good electric car, but also an excellent car.

The Mercedes EQE is the modern recommendation for those buyers who have an affinity for the brand anyway, who want outstanding and vibration-free comfort and who are not dependent on the boot volume of a T-model. This is not only an excellent electric car, but also a first-class car. We cannot give you a binding delivery time. You may have to wait six months. The days of the W123 are over in every way.

The manufacturer provided the test car free of charge and transferred it. The driving energy was partly borne by the manufacturer and partly by the editorial team.
